What's In A Name?

In Season 2, in the episode entitled, "Anti-Thesis" we all got to meet the awful, evil, maniacal "she-witch" who has been a thorn in the side of my beloved Detective Bobby off and on ever since. One of the still unresolved mysteries -- for me at least -- that came out of this episode is shown below in the form of his middle initial. (The big "O.") To my best recollection, I have never heard his middle name mentioned on any of the 117 episodes in which he has appeared thus far. If I'm mistaken, please enlighten me.

Regardless, it got me thinkin'. (Like that surprises you?)

Just what might be the middle name that goes with this sweet face? I did a quick search on Google, and here are a very few possibilities: Oliver, Orson, Oscar, Owen, and the ever popular "Oral." (Behave Vixens.) Please feel free to share your suggestions, or reveal the name if you know it.

On a "similar" note, in "Endgame," Bobby was presented with the horrifying possibility that his biological father might be a notorious serial killer named Mark Ford Brady. So far, in an abbreviated Season 7, we've not been made privy to the fact if Bobby ever investigated to find out if that was, in fact, the truth. But I submit the following for your consideration: If Bobby's real father turns out to be Mark Ford Brady...that would make his name -- are you ready -- Bobby Brady, and I simply cannot accept that. Forgive me, but the refrains of "the Brady Bunch, the Brady Bunch, that's the way we became the Brady Bunch" are now playing on a loop in my brain. Nope, the ruggedly handsome face below is most definitely now and forever will be: Robert O. Goren.

Well, see, I always liked 'Oliver' as a possibility, OR it could just be Robert 'Oooooooh' Goren.
He'll always be my adorable Detective Robert Goren....did I mention that every time SWMNBN calls him 'Bobby', I want to punch her in the mouth?!

As for the 'father' problem, since even Bobby's mother wasn't sure which candidate it was, and both of them are now deceased (so no chance of DNA tests), I guess poor Bobby will never know....or did Frank drop a hint when he said his son (Donny from Untethered') looked more like Bobby than him?! These and other mysteries have yet to be explored - and we'd like to explore 'em soon (please).

I am in complete accord with you on the "she-witch" thing. I cannot stand it when she calls him Bobby.

As for the father thing...I'm thinkin' since Brady was convicted of ... however many murders it was ... they had to present DNA evidence at trial, so his DNA is most likely on file somewhere. If Bobby wants to know, he can find out. As you can see, I've given this a lot of thought. I'm hoping to get a life one day...a bigger life...a better life.

Your life is clearly already full of riches and treasures dear, so don't worry about it ;0)

Well, Robert was a very popular name in the 1950-60s, so that could have come from anywhere.

The likely candidates for "GOREN" as a surname, could be Slavic, Russian, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian ... So if it's an 'ethnic' name, that could be scary.

The social security administration's top 1000 names in 1961 included these possiblities:
245 Oscar
321 Orlando
335 Otis
420 Owen
425 Oliver
612 Orville
664 Otto
692 Odell
712 Omar
744 Ollie
932 Odis
941 Orrin
970 Osvaldo
985 Otha
998 Olin

And finally... His mom was a librarian afterall, perhaps she chose a literary name...
These seem like likeable candidates:

The boy's name Oliver is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "olive tree". Name of one of Charlemagne's knights in the 12th-century poem "Chanson de Roland". Also possibly from Alfihar (Old German) "host of elves" or Olafr (Old Norse) "ancestor". Biblical: the olive tree is a symbol of fruitfulness, beauty, and dignity. Today "extending an olive branch" traditionally signifies an offer of peace. Literary: the title character in Dickens' "Oliver Twist".

The boy's name Orlando is of Spanish origin. Variant of Roland (Old German) "renowned land". Mostly literary and late 19th-century use. Literary: Virginia Woolf wrote a gender-bending fantasy novel "Orlando".

The boy's name Oscar is of Old English origin, and its meaning is "spear of the gods". Also possibly from the Gaelic phrase "os cara", meaning "friend of the deer". James Macpherson used the name in his Ossianic poems. Napoleon, an admirer of those works, imposed it on his little French godson, who ascended the throne of Sweden as Oscar I (or Oskar I). Thus, this British name is now regarded as Scandinavian. The name was revived by 18th century literary use.

I'm tossing a coin between Oscar and Oliver...

Oh, and Chris Noth and his woman did just name their child "Orion"...Perhaps it's a homage ;)

Please the idea of "Bobby Brady" even sharing a name with our fav Detective is ... well just bad. Kind of like thinking of your parents and the word sex....although thinking of Det. Goren and sex... so I'm now totally off track and forgot where I was headed:)

BobbyG said...

Gee, Mary...sex and Bobby. Sounds like a natural combination to me. Little wonder your thoughts navigated in that direction.

And...Tate. All I have to say is welcome...and WOW!! I mean, I've given his name some thought...but nothing like that. Thank you for the neat info and I like Oliver, too.

I'm in between schooling experiences... I'll take any excuse to research. Fantastic television characters are no exception. :)

Thanks for the welcome.

Well, I know no mother would give her son this middle name but...Robert 'Orgasm' Goren makes perfect sense to me :)

Oh Tess...thank you, thank you for a great big belly laugh this morning. 'Twas implied in my "Big O" comment, but I knew one of the Vixens would come through in a more forthright manner. I'm still LOL.

okay... this is what I heard; the O stands for nothing... it is a bit fat O, just the initial, although I quite like tess' thought.

Also Goren is a hebrew word that means 'threshing floor' as in fields and one of my ab fab Israeli ceramic artists is a Dani Goren

hope all's good

lotsa luv ann xxxxx

'Threshing (about on the) Floor' - makes perfect sense to me as a pleasurable activity to be pursued with our Beloved Dectective.

Wow, Tate!

I rather like Owen, though "Robert Owen Goren" is a bit of a mouthful. Perhaps Odin, king of the Norse gods? After all, he's in LOCI, and Loki is one of Odin's sons.

ok....some much brighter brains than mine have obviously given this a lot of thought.I understood that it was just there for balance and that they'd never actually thought of a name to go with the initial..but if I had to pick one I'd go for Oliver..it rolls of the tongue so nicely :-D
